We are delighted to share that James Furse-Roberts has authored a major new paper titled “Chequers: The Evolution of a Garden”, featured in the latest issue of Garden History, the official journal of The Gardens Trust.
The paper offers a definitive look into the rich history and design heritage of Chequers; the historic country residence of the UK Prime Minister. This publication is the culmination of historical research James undertook while developing a comprehensive master plan and new garden design for the estate.
Delving into the archival records of Chequers was a privilege, and it serves as a powerful reminder of how rigorous historical scholarship directly informs practical, modern design solutions for historic estates. At FRLA, we believe that forward-looking landscape design must be anchored in a deep respect for historical context.
As a wonderful bonus, a stunning oil painting of Chequers by artist Marcus May was selected to grace the front cover of this issue.
